After graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) However, following that I was observing the liberal arts experience as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75) and an advocate for education that integrates study of the arts with study of many other fields. This is not a surprise since the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate as well as an MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. The ethnomusicology course was my first in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music within the College of Letters and Science. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions and looking at the whole view. It's great to teach both graduate and undergraduate students. I am an published author of three books: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing the Music of Expressing Culture. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods that are primarily academic pursuits and administrative duties (I am Chair of Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-1998, Chair of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and am now back as Chair of the Department of Music).
